Real Silver Jewelry

925 sterling silver curb chain How do you know what you are buying is real silver jewelry? Once upon a time you could look for the 925 stamp, which is no longer true. There is a lot of silver jewelry on jewelry Websites that claim it is 925 sterling silver, it’s not. There is some unscrupulous tactics of how silver jewelry is made due to the increase in the price of silver. I discovered this recently when I saw a bracelet very similar to the on I sell. I contacted the supplier to inquire about the bracelet. The supplier admitted it was not 92.5% silver but 65% silver and 35% copper. I ordered the bracelet to inspect it and it did have the 925 stamp on it. Could you tell it wasn’t sterling silver? No, as a matter of fact I took this bracelet to a jewelry store to see what they would give me for it. They looked for the stamp, threw it on the scales and gave me a price. They couldn’t tell the difference either. This counterfeit silver jewelry coming from China. They will copy anything and sell it for a fraction of the cost. That is what this bracelet was, a copy.

How can you tell if it’s real silver jewelry? You could use a testing block with a chemical solution or buy from a reputable supplier. The big clue is the price. If it’s cheap then it is this lower grade silver jewelry or it is plated. We only carry sterling silver jewelry that is 92.5% silver. We do not carry plated silver jewelry. I cannot say all silver jewelry that comes from China is this 65/35 mixture. What I am telling you is it is out there. Yes, there is some silver jewelry we carry that comes from China but we do not buy it directly from that country. We buy from reputable suppliers in the US.

This sterling silver curb chain shown above comes from Germany. We offer sterling silver chains from Germany, Italy and the US. This curb chain is one of my favorites and it is available in 18″, 20″ and 24″ lengths.

Silver cuff bracelets make a great fashion accessory for people in a hurry. Just slip your bracelet on and you’re out the door, no time wasted fiddling with a clasp or having someone help you put your bracelet on. Our bracelets are made of the finest sterling silver. Pure silver is much too soft to make jewelry, so 7.5% copper is added, to make it strong enough to keep its shape. Silver cuff bracelets can be wide, with intricate designs or thin with a swirl, floral or plain design. While most cuff bracelets would fit a majority of people, it is best to measure the topside of your wrist to determine the right size bracelet for you. Read the product description to determine if this bracelet would be ideal for you to wear. This 3/8” wide floral cuff bracelet has beautiful swirls and flower patterns that draws admirers, making it an excellent conversation piece. This floral cuff bracelet has an inner dimension of  2 and 1/16″. This bracelet is perfect for people with smaller wrists. We also offer a matching ring for this bracelet.

This bracelet is in a slightly different style, called the hammer style. A simple but bold piece, this is an essential fashion accessory. Its tapered design provides for a comfortable fit, and the shape is slightly concave, but is much wider than the other bracelet and measures 1 and 1/8” in width. This hammered bracelet is one of the larger cuff bracelets we offer and has an inner dimension of 2 and 7/16”. This bracelet is suitable for a man or woman with a larger wrist size.

If you don’t have a tape measure, use a business card to determine the width of your wrist. A standard business card measures 2″ x 3 and 1/2″.

Our sterling silver cuff bracelets are of top quality and have beautiful, elegant, but bold designs. They can be worn to the office, a night out on the town, or add a touch of shine to a Bohemian Chic outfit. A silver cuff bracelet is a must have for women on the go. We’ve seen them on celebrities and women everywhere – you won’t want to miss out!

Types of Silver Jewelry

August 3, 2011

There are different types of silver jewelry available on the market today. Shown left is our leopard sterling silver pendant that has a hidden bail. The type of silver jewelry we sell at SilverStones is .925 sterling silver, that is 92.5% silver. We also sell Argentium silver that is at least 93% silver and fine silver jewelry, that is 99% silver.

Other types of silver jewelry you will find are silver-filled. This type of silver comes in findings, chains and bars that are used to make thin cuff bracelets. Silver-filled, like gold-filled, consists of sterling silver or fine silver that is bonded onto a red brass alloy. Silver-filled is made in two qualities, 1/20 and 1/10 silver which means it is 5% silver in weight or 10% silver in weight. The 1/10 silver-filled has a thicker layer of silver. Silver-filled is more valuable than silver-plated. Silver-filled actually has a layer of silver.

Silver-plated jewelry has a microscopic film of silver over brass. You will find a lot of silver-plated jewelry on the market. Silver-plated jewelry is abbreviated SP. You may see SP in the description of jewelry sold on the Internet. This is the type of silver used in fashion jewelry.

There is a new product on the market called Glinter.  Shown left is an example of Glinter.  Glinter is a white metal alloy composed of copper, zinc and a little bit of silver. The wholesale cost is $1.00 per bead vs. $4.00 per bead if it was sterling silver. We do not use this type of silver in the jewelry we sell.  You will find this type of silver and silver-plated components used in fashion jewelry available in stores, on web sites and at arts and crafts events. If you are buying handcrafted jewelry from a vendor at an arts and crafts event, look them straight in the eye and ask them if it is sterling silver they used to make the item. If they look away when they reply it means they are not telling you the truth.

I personally care if an item is sterling silver or not. If I were to buy some jewelry, I would want to know what type of silver that was used in making the jewelry because I don’t want to be ripped off.  Now my question to you is:  do you care if it is real sterling silver?

Silver Cuff Bracelet

sterling silver rose cuff braceletThis silver cuff bracelet has been marked down to $199.99 from $249.99. This bracelet could increase in price if the cost of silver rises tomorrow. The price of silver has dropped $7.27 an ounce in the past two days.

The reason for this post is to explain the pricing structure on the silver jewelry listed on SilverStones. Many of the higher priced items will drop in price over the next few days providing the price of silver does not increase. Some of this silver jewelry is set at a certain price and will not change when the price of silver increases or decreases from this supplier. Lower priced items from this supplier will not have much of a price reduction, as we did not raise the price on those items over the past two months. Closeout items are not reduced in price but are in low quantity and may not be available much longer. This sterling silver rose cuff bracelet is in closeout.

Another supplier we use will only change their price when the price of silver goes up or down $4.00. We have not been notified of a price change from this supplier but we do expect them to reduce their price providing the price of silver continues to drop. The other two suppliers we use just raised their prices. They may or may not reduce their prices and it could be awhile before they do. Any item that has a very small amount of silver will not have much of a price change.

You can expect to see a reduction in price in our necklace, bracelet, and pendant sections as well as some items in the turquoise section. It will take a few days before we can obtain the new price and update it on our website. In the meantime, check our Silver Jewelry Sale for discounts on our .925 sterling silver jewelry and gemstone jewelry.

Silver Jewelry Price Increase

Author: st angela
May 2, 2011

sterling silver 925 braceletWhy has the price of silver jewelry increased? The price of silver itself has been varying from $45 to $50 an ounce due largely to speculation and investors trying to protect their money. Demand also figures into the price of silver. Silver is not only use to make jewelry; it is also used in other products. Forty percent of silver is used industrially – in solar batteries, water purification systems, cell phones, circuit boards, plasma TV’s and radio frequency identification devices (RFID’s). It is estimated the global demand for silver, largely driven by India and China, will increase 36% by the end of 2015. Every year the world produces 550 million ounces of silver. The demand for silver worldwide is 850 million ounces a year.

In 1980, silver prices increased 10 times the previous levels from $5 an oz. to $48.70 an oz. The Hunt Brothers, oil tycoons, bought two million ounces in silver options and futures that caused terrible shortages and drove the price sky high. Investors followed the lead of the Hunt Brothers. These investors are still waiting on their return of $138 an oz. (adjusted due to inflation). When silver was high in the 80′s, profit seekers sold their silver jewelry and bouillons that caused the price of silver to drop sharply. Another factor on the price of silver was high fuel costs and inflation. Sound familiar?

In January of 2009, silver was $7 an ounce. In the past month the price of silver doubled. Today the price of silver is $46.53. Should you buy silver options and futures as an investment? Who knows? You could find yourself in the same situation as those profit seekers in 1980. According to Money News gold could hit $2,000 an oz. by the end of this year, today it is $1,564 an oz. I personally think gold would make a better investment. If you have gold or silver jewelry that is of good quality, don’t sell it unless you absolutely have to. Why do you think there are all these shops around wanting to buy your gold and silver jewelry, because they know something you don’t? The silver that is valuable is .925 (92.5% silver) and fine silver – 99.9% silver.
