Blue topaz jewelry is very popular fashion accessory, like this blue topaz ring in a sterling silver setting accented with multiple CZ’s. All topaz stones we offer are faceted gemstones and are available in matching rings, pendants, bracelets and earrings.
Naturally occurring blue topaz is quite rare. Typically this stone is heated or irradiated to produce a more desired darker blue stone. Other names for blue topaz are Sky Blue Topaz and Swiss Blue Topaz. These names are used by the gem trades when referring to the depth of color of these gemstones.
Blue topaz is the gemstone for the US state of Texas. Topaz typically crystallizes in grantic pegmatite’s or in vapor cavities in rhyolite lava flows like those at Topaz Mountain in western Utah. Colorless and light blue varieties of topaz are found in Precambrian granite in Mason County, Texas within the Llana Uplift, however; there is no commercial mining of topaz in that area. Topaz is mined in several countries around the world.
You should never stem clean or ultrasonically clean topaz jewelry. Used mild soapy water to clean your topaz jewelry regardless of the color.

There are different types of silver jewelry available on the market today. Shown left is our leopard sterling silver pendant that has a hidden bail. The type of silver jewelry we sell at SilverStones is .925 sterling silver, that is 92.5% silver. We also sell Argentium silver that is at least 93% silver and fine silver jewelry, that is 99% silver.
Other types of silver jewelry you will find are silver-filled. This type of silver comes in findings, chains and bars that are used to make thin cuff bracelets. Silver-filled, like gold-filled, consists of sterling silver or fine silver that is bonded onto a red brass alloy. Silver-filled is made in two qualities, 1/20 and 1/10 silver which means it is 5% silver in weight or 10% silver in weight. The 1/10 silver-filled has a thicker layer of silver. Silver-filled is more valuable than silver-plated. Silver-filled actually has a layer of silver.
Silver-plated jewelry has a microscopic film of silver over brass. You will find a lot of silver-plated jewelry on the market. Silver-plated jewelry is abbreviated SP. You may see SP in the description of jewelry sold on the Internet. This is the type of silver used in fashion jewelry.
There is a new product on the market called Glinter. Shown left is an example of Glinter. Glinter is a white metal alloy composed of copper, zinc and a little bit of silver. The wholesale cost is $1.00 per bead vs. $4.00 per bead if it was sterling silver. We do not use this type of silver in the jewelry we sell. You will find this type of silver and silver-plated components used in fashion jewelry available in stores, on web sites and at arts and crafts events. If you are buying handcrafted jewelry from a vendor at an arts and crafts event, look them straight in the eye and ask them if it is sterling silver they used to make the item. If they look away when they reply it means they are not telling you the truth.
I personally care if an item is sterling silver or not. If I were to buy some jewelry, I would want to know what type of silver that was used in making the jewelry because I don’t want to be ripped off. Now my question to you is: do you care if it is real sterling silver?

SilverStones offers natural stone jewelry in semi-precious and fine gemstone jewelry. Once upon a time there was a rule as to what stones were categorized as fine gemstones but that rule no longer applies today. We categorize our opaque stones as semi-precious and carry natural stone jewelry in turquoise, lapis lazuli, denim lapis, Baltic amber, black onyx, and multi-stone jewelry with a combination of semi-precious stones. In our fine gemstone jewelry section we carry amethyst, topaz, citrine, freshwater pearl and multi-stone jewelry. The gemstones in this section are translucent stones. You will also find more fine gemstone jewelry in our unique handcrafted section with garnets and jewelry with a combination of semi-precious stones and fine gemstones with calcite, garnets, amethyst, peridot, moonstone, amber and mother-of-pearl (MOP).
We highly scrutinize the stones we offer on our website. You will find gemstone jewelry on the Internet that are glass replicas of translucent gemstones. These gemstones have no value and do not have meta physical properties, such as, what these stones will do for you. Watch out for the term fashion jewelry. The stones used in this jewelry are usually fake. Simulated is another word that means it is not a real gemstone. Read the descriptions carefully when buying turquoise jewelry. You will often find that it is not turquoise but colored to look like turquoise. There is another post on our blog regarding turquoise jewelry – how to identify real turquoise with pictures of what real turquoise looks like. Read our FAQ section on our website for more information on terms used to describe stones.
The ring shown above has a hot pink topaz faceted gemstone with six diamonds in a white gold setting. This ring is located in the fine gemstone jewelry section under the topaz.
